Hobsonville Land Co has made a bid to share access of the base redevelopment. A hearing with independent planning commissioners for coastal permits and land-use consent began last week.
Proposals include a recreational boat ramp, artificial beach, tidal stairs, boardwalk, ferry wharf, and marina pontoons. This will be alongside the redevelopment of 3000 homes, shops, schools, and the marine ‘cluster’.
Opening up the coastal edge to the public is expected to benefit the future community and Auckland region through increased access and transport links.
This proposed marine industry precinct will eventually include about 100,000m² of marine industry and associated buildings. It is expected to offer employment opportunities for around 1000 people.
A super yacht builder is already occupying part of the headland, and three more boat building companies operate in the former aircraft hangers.
Facilities for the marine industry, such as the super yacht launch, finishing berth and mooring area, would be developed and managed by Waitakere Properties, an entity called Yard 37.
The existing ferry wharf would be demolished for a new structure of 90m long which will have a canopy and 13 public visitor berths.
The old seaplane ramp would be repaired in association with the Historic Places Trust.
The 44-berth marina has 40m outer fingers for use by the public and Hobsonville Yacht Club.
Super yachts of up to 75m will be catered for at a finishing berth.
