For this video we’re in Whakatane to review the McLay Fortress 521 centre console on Ohiwa Harbour.

MCLAY FORTRESS 521

Trade-a-Boat reviewer Matt Jones emphasised that all McLay boats that he’s been to date have been tough and well-built aluminium boats.

“They are a strongly built boat,” agrees Gareth Flowerday from Ocean Sports Marine, who joined us on the day to demonstrate the boat’s credentials. “They’re a full welded hull. Underfloor buoyancy is a safety factor with them,” he says.

Being a centre console, the McLay Fortress 521 naturally has numerous features aimed squarely at anglers.

Rodholders are liberally found throughout the boat and the removable bait board has a livebait tank underneath. The raised casting platform at the bow is a nice touch as is the anchor locker.

In the cockpit is underfloor storage that accommodates two 25lt tote tanks, with more storage underneath the seats. There’s also a 105lt chilly bin.

For electronics, the McLay Fortress 521 centre console is equipped with a Lowrance HDS-9 touchscreen plotter / sounder combo.
