Chimere is a strong and proven vessel, equipped for extensive cruising, or remote voyaging. With 5 private cabins - and bunks for 10 or more - she will suit an experienced, discerning buyer looking for a safe, go-anywhere boat with room for friends and family, or to liveaboard capabilities have been well demonstrated through having completed four medical-transport-aid missions (with Medical Sailing Ministries Inc. www.msm.org.au) to the remote islands of Vanuatu between 2009 and 2017.
Each mission was of six months duration and in total involved around 100 sailing and medical volunteers, each coming and going at pre-determined times and locations, with between 11 and 13 people living aboard for two weeks at a time.
Professionally maintained and slipped every 1-2 years, Chimere is normally berthed at Westernport Marina Hastings (VIC). She did a circumnavigation of Tasmania in 2019 and is currently berthed in Wellington (NZ) having made it half way through a four-month voyage around New Zealand, before COVID-19 hit. Current plans should see her return to Westernport in May 2021.
In many respects Chimere resembles a small ship, with her high bulwarks, clear decks, snug cockpit and significant storage capacity. Whilst her relatively low rig means she doesn't point to windward like a modern, light weight production boat, she can clock a lazy 7-8 knots with minimal heal, when the wind moves just off the bow. Consuming around 4-5 litres of diesel per hour, the 85hp Perkins motor makes motor-sailing a viable option when deadlines need to be met, or the wind dies off. With total diesel storage of 1,400 litres, this translates into a range of around 1,500 - 2,000 NM at 1800RPM.
"Chimere" translates from the French into something akin to "chasing rainbows", or "unachievable dream". But for us, Chimere has been the fulfillment of a lifelong dream to sail the South Pacific. Since her purchase in 2006, we have maintained a constant program of improvements, additions and enhancements; all the while paying professionals to undertake most installations and maintenance. After 14 years and owing to changed family circumstances, we must now reluctantly put Chimere on the market.
Chimere is extremely strong, has a draft of around 1.8m and was built in 1984 by Barrenjoey Yachts in NSW, with the Jean Vinges design being based on the MacLear and Harris (Abeking & Rasmussen built), yacht Angantyr
