Second-hand boats: 2009 Yamaha VX Cruiser WaveRunner

We don’t often feature personal watercraft in this section, yet these versatile mini-boats have become so much more than just water toys.

Easily handled, economical to run, safe, fast and efficient, these vessels are now regularly used for ‘serious’ pursuits of fishing and diving in addition to their popular ‘fun’ activities.

Yamaha has become one of the leaders in the field, and its WaveRunners are the top-selling PWCs in the industry. This is a 2009 VX Cruiser, one of its mid-range and more versatile models. With a moulded twin seat it provides secure and comfortable seating for up to three occupants, with two sitting on the rear section.

Although the compact four-stroke 1100cc engine has more than enough power for most uses, this is in a package that is economical to own and operate. The 57-litre fuel tank provides a cruising range of over 240km at 28 knots, and even when operated at full throttle will still cover something like 175km at an eye-watering 49 knots.

Non-PWC users may be surprised to learn there is more than 70 litres of storage capacity on board, in various dry stowage compartments. A tow hook under the seat enables the WaveRunner to be used for towing a skier or another vessel, and a large stern platform makes it easy for swimmers or divers to get back on board. There is also a wide range of aftermarket accessories available to convert the WaveRunner to a fishing or diving platform.

This PWC has done a mere 56 hours and comes on a DMW galvanised trailer. At this price it represents excellent value for someone wanting a reliable and versatile craft.
